Pixel Watch Fall Detection

product · safety · google · pixel watch

Fall Detection is a safety feature on Pixel Watch that uses the watch's sensors to detect if you've taken a hard fall — and automatically connects you with emergency services if you're unable to respond. I led this as part of the Personal Safety suite shipping across Pixel Watch, alongside Car Crash Detection and Loss of Pulse Detection.

How It Works

Pixel Watch continuously monitors motion using its accelerometer and gyroscope. When the watch detects the characteristic pattern of a hard fall — a sudden impact followed by a period of stillness — it triggers an alert on the watch face, plays an audible alarm, and starts a countdown. If the wearer taps "I'm OK," the alert is dismissed. If there's no response, the watch automatically calls emergency services and shares the user's location.

The detection model is tuned to distinguish genuine falls from everyday activities like sitting down quickly or dropping the watch — minimizing false positives while remaining reliably sensitive to the falls that actually matter.

A Platform for Emergency Response

Fall Detection is one part of a broader emergency response platform on Pixel Watch. Together with Car Crash Detection and Loss of Pulse Detection, it creates a wearable that can autonomously recognize life-threatening situations and get help — even when the wearer is incapacitated and unable to call for help themselves.

Each detection mode draws on different sensor signals: the accelerometer and gyroscope for falls and crashes, and the optical heart rate sensor for loss of pulse. The combination means Pixel Watch can respond across a wider range of emergencies than any single signal could detect.

Emergency Location Integration

When Fall Detection triggers an emergency call, it integrates with Emergency Location Service (ELS) to deliver precise location data to 911 dispatchers — even when the user is outdoors, in an unfamiliar area, or unable to speak. This is especially critical for falls in isolated environments: a hike, a solo workout, or a fall at home where no one else is present.
