Pixel Car Crash Detection

Car Crash Detection is a safety feature built into Pixel phones that uses the device's sensors to detect if you've been in a serious car crash — and automatically calls emergency services if you're unable to respond. I led this as part of the Personal Safety product suite within Android Peace of Mind.

How It Works

Car Crash Detection uses a combination of the Pixel's accelerometer, microphone, and location data to identify the patterns associated with a serious vehicular collision — the sudden deceleration, the sounds of impact, and the environmental context of being in a moving vehicle. When a crash is detected, the phone plays a loud alarm and prompts the user to confirm they're okay. If there's no response within a short window, it automatically calls 911 and shares the user's location with emergency services.

The feature runs continuously in the background with minimal battery impact, and is available automatically to Pixel users in supported regions — no manual setup required.

Expanding the Platform

Car Crash Detection launched on Pixel phones and was later extended to Pixel Watch, where it complements Fall Detection and Loss of Pulse Detection as part of a broader suite of emergency response capabilities on the wrist. Together these features position Pixel as a platform that can respond to life-threatening situations autonomously — even when the user is incapacitated.

The watch implementation brought additional signal fidelity from wrist-worn sensors, improving detection accuracy and reducing false positives in ambiguous scenarios like off-road driving or rough terrain.

Emergency Response Integration

When a crash is detected, Car Crash Detection integrates with Emergency Location Service (ELS) to deliver precise location data to 911 dispatchers. This is particularly valuable in situations where a crash occurs in an unfamiliar area or on an isolated road — giving first responders a reliable starting point even when the user cannot communicate their location.
