Camping Light

product · tinkering

I'm an avid camper. I love hanging out late around the campfire and sleeping under the stars.

I've always wanted a camping light that I could easily move from hanging in my tent to sitting on the table while I eat. I could never find one I loved.

So, I created a modern, square light with a magnet on top. The magnet clips to a string with a small metal plate, which you can permanently hang in the roof of your tent. Then you can easily reach up; the magnet quickly clips, and the light hangs with no effort. When you head back out you just grab and go.

I sketched out some ideas, then cut plexiglass blocks to size to create a modern square lens. I built a battery pack on top which also housed a small LED pointing down through the lens. On top of the battery pack I inserted a Neodymium Super Magnet. It was strong enough to stick to metal surfaces - like your refrigerator - which was useful on metal bear boxes.

It's not a fine tuned product yet - but it's fun and useful, and I hope to make it in quantity one day.
